Bombardment of Balikpapan, Borneo July 1945
"With General MacArthur aboard, we covered the landings at Balikpapan. The B-24s had preceded us and created most of the smoke you see.
Our bombardment began in the early dawn, it was still dark enough that I could see our shells, red hot, passing toward shore. Directing
them to target was not easy, but became so as it became lighter."
"Against the advice of his aides, after the successful landings, MacArthur left the ship and waded ashore
with plenty of photographers to record the event."
